My Jazz Story

The first jazz record I bought was Herbie Hancock's "Headhunters." While traditional jazz lovers wouldn't consider that to be straightahead jazz (my passion for John Coltrane's "A Love Supreme" and Miles Davis' "Kind of Blue" would be felt much later), it was an eye-opening musical experience for me, nevertheless. Hancock's use of synthesizers, which were relatively new during the early to mid 1970s, was dazzling and defied genre categorization. I hadn't heard music so funky and simultaneously instrumental! It was a visceral reaction that I had to this keyboard virtuoso's approach to jazz that immediately spoke to me. I knew that I had to have more of Herbie Hancock's electronic-period music (again, later I would explore Herbie H's Blue Note records), which led me to purchase the following masterpieces: "Thrust", "Man Child", and "Secrets." I was hooked. There was no turning back! :-)
