Ivo Perelman/ Matthew Shipp Duo, Simon Nabatov & Orchestra Nazionale Della Luna

The prolific saxophonist Ivo Perelman continues to release excellent recordings at a staggering pace. I think it's six so far in 2024. Perelman is now into another phase of making duo albums and the latest with long-time collaborator pianist Matthew Shipp is stunning, The two giants of improvisation create as one. Highly recommended. I confess to having a serious jones for the European quartet, Orchestra Nazionale Della Luna ever since their first album back in 2017. Sounds like an Italian band, but that's the only connection. Founders pianist Kari Ikonen is Finnish; co-founder reed master Manuel Hermia is from Belgium, as is drummer Teun Verbruggen, while bassist Sebastian Boisseau is French. All are steeped in jazz improvisation, but ONDL draws upon all manner of world influences. Their new Selene's View is very, very interesting. German resident, but Moscow-born pianist Simon Nabatov's new Lovely Music's title is a bit misleading because it's a very strong set of music by Nabatov and his quartet and the addition of trumpeter Ralph Alessi. Other new items sampled come from trumpeters Kenny Warren and Nicole Connelly, pianists Shinya lin, Phillip Golub and Italy's Gaspare Di Lieto (with poetry), and Italian saxophonist Enzo Favata. A truly full house of great music in this episode. Give it a listen!
