2019 Providencia International Jazz Festival
By
In just two days, the Festival Internacional de Jazz de Providencia met the expectations of the public. The eighteenth edition of this event, held in the Sculpture Park of Providencia, Chile, was produced by its new director and a Chilean drummer with a long career, Alejandro Espinoza. Unlike in previous years, Espinoza developed a program emphasizing the Latin American sound. The first night of the festival, with Brazilian pianist Amilton Godoy and Argentinian pianist Adrian Iaies, gave the audience a shortened jazz repertoire between a lot of Bossa Nova and Tango.
Friday, January 18 featured the Remembering Zimbo Trio with Amilton Godoy on piano, Christian Galvez on bass, and Eduardo Nunes Ribeiro on drums. Singer Gabrielle Stravelli's NYC Quintet + Tim Armacost also performed, including pianist Art Hirahara, bassist Patrick O'Leary, and drummer Gustavo Diaz. The Adrian Iaies & Colegiales Quartet with Iaies on piano, Facundo Guevara's percussion, Diana Arias on bass and trumpeter Mariano Loiacono Noneto finished the Friday show.
On Saturday, January 19, the David Young Group was onstage with bassist Dave Young, trumpeter Kevin Turcotte, tenor saxophonist Perry White , drummer Nelson Oliva, and pianist Patricio Roehrs. Andrea Tessa and Carl Hammond's big band closed out the festival.
